It’s Not About Tonsils Anymore

Written by Kim on Aug 4th, 2009 | Filed under: Children's Health, Uncategorized

Even 2-3 years ago, if your child snored or had trouble breathing while sleeping, the Ear, Nose and Throat doctor automatically urged you to have your child’s tonsils removed. For decades, it was assumed that enlarged tonsils were the leading cause of sleep dyspnea.

But that thinking is being strongly challenged.  Researchers at Penn State recently published the results of a study involving 700 randomly chosen children, none of whom were previously treated for sleeping difficulty, in the medical journal Sleep.

Findings show that about a quarter of the children had mild or moderate sleep-disordered breathing. Tonsil size was not associated with disordered breathing, and nasal abnormalities were a factor only in mild cases.

But waist circumference and body mass index were strong independent risk factors for snoring and other breathing problems during sleep. “This is another red flag related to obesity, another reason to be concerned,” said Edward O. Bixler, a professor of psychiatry at Penn State who led the research. “The metabolic issues in adults associated with obesity are now beginning to be found in younger children.”

2010cartoonobesity_gallery__403x400-420x0Several additional studies have recently shown that obesity in expectant moms also increases the risk of asthma in infants and children.

Coupled together, weight is quickly becoming one of the greatest threats to our children’s ability to live a long, happy and healthy life. Unlike which genes we pass along, how our children’s cells organize during gestation or even what germs our kids are exposed to, we can control what we eat and what they eat.

I often wonder how many studies will have to be published and how many children and their parents will have to suffer before our culture changes and begins to make healthy nutrition a real priority. When will we finally begin to see that the food we eat and the lifestyles we lead are actually reducing life expectancy instead of increasing it?

Below are three easy tips you can use today to make a change for yourself and your family. Pass them along and take a stand for your health and the health of those you love!

1. Replace white potatoes in your meals with cauliflower (which can be whipped up and tastes just like mashed potatoes) or use sweet potatoes which have many more nutrients (like beta carotene) than Idaho potatoes.

2. Play active games with your kids especially games like Wii sports or Dance Dance Revolution. These are games that many kids love and you’re likely to love too and studies have shown that playing these games for 40 minutes provides the same benefit as “traditional” exercise.

3. Consider supplementing your meals and your child’s meals with a high quality nutritional shake like Herbalife’s Formula One. These delicious shakes (which can be made with real fruit) offer perfectly balanced nutrition, are quick to make and are great for families who are always on-the-go. There are even kid tested and approved, great tasting, healthy snacks designed especially for your child’s growing body!

Is your weight holding you back at work?

If there was ever a case of the truth being a harsh mistress, this might just be it. A study published by New York University shows that a woman’s weight is directly correlated to her financial well-being. nyu

The study found that each 1 % increase in women’s BMI means a .6 percent decrease in future family income. So, a 60-pound weight difference between two 5-foot-4 women would account for a 30 percent difference in their future family incomes. Simply put: the skinnier woman’s family earned $100,000 annually compared to $70,000 for the heavier gal. According to the study, much of this income difference occurs because the heavier women are, the poorer their spouses are likely to be and that’s if she gets married. For each 1 percent BMI increase, the prospects of matrimony decrease .35 percent.

But discounting the marriage effect for a moment, take a look at the absolutely shocking affect of a woman’s weight on her salary in the business world.

For every 1 percent increase in BMI, the study found a .4 percent decrease in future job prestige, with prestige measured by public surveys long used by sociologists. So, a 100 percent difference in BMI — a 5-foot-4 woman weighing 120 pounds versus one weighing 240 — meant the difference between becoming a lawyer, a high prestige job, and an insurance agent, a medium prestige job or between a medium-prestige secretary and a low-prestige housekeeper.

While I absolutely DO NOT agree that weight *should* play a role in a woman’s earning potential, I can say that I know that this discrimination does take place. As women, together we ought to rail against the portions of our society who objectify women and perpetuate the idea that skinny = better.

That being said, we as women also have a responsibility to stand together and admit that the cultural and societal pressure that pushes us to be everything to everyone all the time, often leaves us hurrying from place to place and doesn’t allow us to eat well or take proper care of our bodies.

Take a moment to think about what life would be like if your body stopped working or your health failed. I’m betting just the mere thought is enough to take your breath away.

Today, and everyday, make a commitment to support one another, love another, try to eat healthy and take good care of yourself and the women you love. After all, it’s our job to take care of everyone else – what would the world do without us?

White Oak Nutrition. The place for healthy food, fast!

White Oak Nutrition. Fast Food for Smart People!

Welcome to Body Healthy. Soul Happy. My name is Kim Blatt and I’ve been the proud owner of White Oak Nutrition for about 2 and 1/2 years.

I started off in my career with all the right things. I was bright, energetic, active and attractive. But after 10 years in the newspaper business sitting behind a desk, eating unhealthy food and trying to keep up with the rat race, I was exhausted, 30lbs overweight and feeling lousy.

One day I woke up and realized two things.  First, my industry was dying around me and second, I was dying too. I knew that if I was going to take back control of life and find a job that reinvigorated and fulfilled me professionally, the first thing I had to do was be able to look in the mirror and feel good about the woman who was staring back at me.

After several failed attempts using Jenny, Weight Watchers, NutriSystems and just about every other weight loss system on the market I was ready to just scream!

And that’s when I met Larry. He had used HerbaLife products to lose 20 lbs and was convinced that they would work for me too. Long story short, 10 days later my energy was through the roof and within 6 weeks I had lost 12 ½ inches and 12 lbs of pure fat. I was back in my “skinny” jeans and finally feeling like the Kim I used to know! I know the results sound amazing and that’s because they are. Your body doesn’t want to carry around all that extra fat anymore than you want it to and when I finally found products that gave my body really good nutrition and all the vitamins, nutrients and proteins that it wanted, my body was more than happy to shed all the fat and toxins that it was carrying around.

During those 2 months I really fell in love the HerbaLife products and the way they made me feel and then it *hit* me! I wanted to spend the rest of my life giving people the same gift Larry had given me; a way and a reason to feel good again.

And that’s what I’ve been doing for the past two and 1/2 years with the White Oak Nutrition Club. I’ve been learning everything I can about what makes us healthy, what hurts us and how I can help change the fact that kids who are 3 years old right now are part of the first generation since WWII not expected to outlived their parents!

This blog is here to help you learn about how together, we can create a healthier and happier world. Feel free to ask any questions or post comments and check back often, because every week we’ll have several posts that are sure to shock, astound and amaze you!
